🐼 5 Fun and Secret Facts About Giant Pandas!
Pandas look like big, fluffy teddy bears wearing black sunglasses! They are super cute when they roll around and eat bamboo. But did you know they have many amazing secrets? Let’s find out 5 fun facts about pandas!
1. They Eat Bamboo All Day Long!
Pandas love bamboo so much! In fact, 99% of a panda’s diet is just green bamboo. Because bamboo does not give them a lot of energy, they have to eat a mountain of it! A panda can eat for 12 hours a day and munch up to 12 to 38 kilograms (26 to 84 pounds) of bamboo daily!
2. Pandas Have a Secret Sixth Finger!
How do pandas hold slippery bamboo so well? They have a special superpower! Pandas have a unique “pseudo-thumb” on their paws, which works like a sixth finger. It is actually a special wrist bone that grew long over time. It helps them grip bamboo stalks tightly, just like humans use their thumbs!
3. They are Born as Tiny as a Stick of Butter!
Giant pandas grow up to be very big and heavy. But when a baby panda is born, it is surprisingly tiny! A newborn panda cub is pink, hairless, and about the same size as a single stick of butter! It weighs only about 100 grams (3.5 ounces), which is 900 times smaller than its mommy!
4. Pandas are Master Tree Climbers!
Pandas look round and heavy, so you might think they only stay on the ground. But surprise! Pandas are excellent tree climbers and strong swimmers, too! Even baby pandas start learning how to climb tall trees when they are only 7 months old to stay safe or just take a nice nap up high.
5. They Don’t Sleep Through the Winter!
Most bears love to hibernate, which means they go into a super long sleep during the cold winter. But pandas do not do this! Why? Because their favorite food, bamboo, does not let them build up enough body fat to sleep all winter. Instead, pandas just walk down the mountains to warmer places to keep eating!
