Giraffes are the tallest animals in the whole world! They have beautiful patterns and very, very long necks. But they also have some super cool secrets. Let’s find out 5 fun facts about giraffes!
1. A Tongue That is Longer Than Your Arm!
Did you know that a giraffe has a giant tongue? A giraffe’s tongue can be up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) long! That is longer than a child’s arm! Even cooler, their tongue is a dark purple or blue color. This dark color protects their tongue from getting sunburned while they eat leaves all day.
2. They Sleep Standing Up!
Giraffes live in the wild safari where scary animals like lions live. To stay safe, giraffes usually sleep standing up! If a dangerous animal comes, they can run away instantly. They also sleep for only about 30 minutes a day, divided into very short power naps!
3. The Long Neck Has Only 7 Bones!
A giraffe’s neck is incredibly long, so you might think it has hundreds of bones. But surprise! Just like humans, giraffes have only 7 neck bones! Each single bone is just super big and stretched out. Nature is so amazing, isn’t it?

When a mommy giraffe gives birth, she doesn’t lie down—she stays standing up! This means a newborn baby giraffe drops down from about 2 meters (6 feet) high to the ground! But don’t worry, they don’t get hurt. In fact, the baby can stand up and walk just one hour after being born!
