🦚 5 Fun and Secret Facts About Ostriches!
Ostriches are the biggest and heaviest birds on the whole planet! They have very long legs and beautiful, fluffy feathers. Even though they are birds, they cannot fly in the sky! But they have many other incredible superpowers. Let’s find out 5 fun facts about ostriches!
1. They Can Run Faster Than a Car!
Ostriches cannot fly, but they are the fastest two-legged runners in the world! An ostrich can run up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour! That is faster than a car driving in your neighborhood. Thanks to their long and super strong legs, they can take giant steps that are 5 meters (16 feet) long in just one stride!
2. An Eye That is Bigger Than Its Brain!
Ostriches have incredibly large, beautiful eyes with long eyelashes. In fact, an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its entire brain! Their eyes are the biggest of any land animal, measuring about the size of a billiard ball. This helps them see danger coming from very far away across the flat safari.
3. They Don’t Actually Hide Their Heads in the Sand!
Have you ever heard that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when they are scared? That is actually a funny mistake! Ostriches do not hide their heads in the sand. When danger comes, they lay their long necks flat on the ground to blend in with the dirt. From far away, it just looks like their head has disappeared!
4. A Giant Egg That Can Feed a Whole Family!
Because ostriches are huge, they lay the biggest eggs in the world! A single ostrich egg weighs about 1.4 kilograms (3 pounds), which is as heavy as 24 chicken eggs! The shell is so thick and strong that a small child can actually stand on top of it without breaking it!
5. Wings Used as Cool Steering Wheels!
If ostriches cannot fly, why do they have wings? They use their big wings like steering wheels on a race car! When an ostrich runs super fast and wants to turn left or right quickly, it opens its wings to balance and change direction smoothly. Their wings also help them stay cool during hot sunny days.
